How to play Tetris

In Tetris, shapes made of four squares (called tetrominoes) fall one at a time into a playing field that is 10 squares wide and 20 squares high. You move and rotate each shape as it falls.

• Complete a line with no gaps and it disappears, earning you points.
• Clear several lines at once for bigger scores – clearing four lines together scores the most.
• The pace increases as you clear more lines and move up levels.
• The game ends when the stack of blocks reaches the top of the field.

You also get small bonus points for dropping pieces faster. You move up a level every 10 lines, and your best score is saved in your browser.

Tips to score higher

• Keep the stack flat. Avoid tall towers and deep holes – flat surfaces give every shape a place to land.
• Leave one column open on the side for the long straight piece, so you can clear four lines at once.
• Watch the “Next” piece and plan your move before the current piece lands.
• Use the ghost piece. The faint outline shows exactly where your piece will land.
• Don’t panic when it speeds up. Use the instant drop (Space) only when you’re sure of the position.

History of Tetris

Tetris was created by Alexey Pajitnov, a Soviet computer engineer working at the Dorodnitsyn Computing Centre in Moscow. He finished the first playable version on June 6, 1984.

• The name combines tetra (Greek for “four” – every piece has four squares) with tennis, Pajitnov’s favourite sport.
• The game spread quickly among computer users in Moscow, and was soon ported to the IBM PC with help from Vadim Gerasimov, a young student.
• It reached the West in the late 1980s. Tetris became the first entertainment software exported from the Soviet Union to the United States, where Spectrum HoloByte published it for the IBM PC and other computers (source)).
• The licensing story was famously messy – rights were sold and re-sold before the Soviet state agency ELORG made direct deals with publishers (Den of Geek).
• The 1989 Nintendo Game Boy version made Tetris a worldwide hit and one of the best-known video games of all time.
